The Ten Heavenly Stems (天干, Tiangan) are the foundational layer of the BaZi Four Pillars chart. Derived from the Five Elements split into Yang and Yin polarities — five elements × two polarities = ten stems — they form the top row of every pillar and represent what is visible: how a person presents to the world, how external events unfold, and what energies are consciously expressed. Each stem is not simply an "element type." It is a precise energetic signature with its own natural image, behavioral tendencies, seasonal strength, elemental relationships, and interaction patterns. Yang Wood (甲 Jia) is the towering tree; Yin Wood (乙 Yi) is the vine. Yang Fire (丙 Bing) is the Sun; Yin Fire (丁 Ding) is the candle flame. The distinction matters in analysis — same element, entirely different expression. In this section, each of the ten stems is covered in depth: its core identity and natural image, Five Element relationships (what produces it, what controls it, what it produces and dominates), personality traits, behavior across the Four Pillars, and key combinations and clashes with other stems. Where relevant, the stem's role in Feng Shui — directional associations, 24 Mountains sectors, and annual cycle influence — is also addressed. These guides are written for practitioners, serious students, and anyone who wants to move beyond surface-level descriptions toward a genuine understanding of how each stem operates inside a real chart.
