The Symbol: The Open Vessel
The structure of the Kun trigram is three yin (broken) lines. It is the only trigram made entirely of yin lines, just as its counterpart Qian is made entirely of yang lines. This visual represents complete openness and receptivity. It is the open field ready for the seed, the empty vessel ready to be filled. Its power lies not in action, but in receiving, holding, nurturing, and transforming.
The Archetype: The Mother
In the family, Kun is the Mother (the Matriarch). She is the source of all nourishment, care, and unconditional support. She is the stable, practical center of the family who holds everyone together. Kun in Feng Shui: The Relationship & Marriage Sector
The Southwest sector of your home, governed by Kun, is the “Relationship and Marriage Palace.” This is a crucial area for romantic harmony, partnership, and the well-being of the woman of the house. A strong Kun sector promotes stable, loving, and supportive relationships.

- Earth Element: This is the primary element. Enhance with crystals (Rose Quartz is a classic for love, Amethyst is also good), natural stones, pottery, and ceramic objects.
- Fire Element: In the 5-element cycle, Fire creates Earth. This is the activator. Add items in pairs, such as two red candles, a pair of lamps with warm light, or decor in red, pink, or purple.

- Caution: Avoid the Wood element. Wood destroys Earth. Do not place large plants, tall wooden items, or the color green here, as it can harm the relationship. Also, limit Metal (it drains Earth).
Kun in Personal Life & Health
In the body, Kun governs the abdomen, stomach, spleen, and the entire digestive system. It is also intrinsically linked to the womb and female reproductive organs. An imbalance in Kun energy often manifests as digestive problems, chronic worry (overthinking), fatigue, or gynecological issues.
Kun’s Role in Flying Stars (Xuan Kong)
In the Flying Star system, Kun corresponds to the Star 2 Black (Er Hei). This is a Yin Earth star and, unfortunately, in its current state, it has a very negative reputation.
Star 2 is known as the “Sickness Star.” In Periods 8 and 9 (from 2004 to 2043), this star is untimely and is one of the most dangerous inauspicious stars. When it appears in a chart, it is associated with illness, disease, lethargy, and bad luck. Unlike the nurturing Kun trigram, this star must be “cured” (weakened) with the Metal element, not activated with Fire or Earth.
